To learn with respect and belief; to challenge, create and dream!

British Values

STATEMENT OF BRITISH VALUES

The Department for Education (DfE) states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The DfE defines British Values as follows:

  • Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process
  • Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all
  • Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law
  • Respect and tolerance of different faiths and religions and other beliefs

At Kempsey Primary School, we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain.  We ensure that the fundamental British values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school.  All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering the understanding of these concepts.  We are committed to serving our community, and we recognize the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom.  We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to intimidation or radicalization by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

DEMOCRACY:

  • Pupils are provided with a broad general knowledge of, and promote respect for, public institutions and services.
  • We teach pupils how they can influence decision making through the democratic process
  • We include in the curriculum information on the advantages and disadvantages of democracy and how it works in Britain and other countries
  • Help pupils to express their views and encourage pupils to respect the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard
  • We do this through:
    • Our School Parliament with elected representatives from Key Stage 2 classes
    • Circle Time and PSHE lessons
    • History topics such as the Ancient Greeks
    • A strong focus on collaborative learning which encourages children to work together to make decision and form consensus

RULE OF LAW

  • We ensure school rules and expectations are clear and fair
  • We help pupils to distinguish right from wrong and encourage them to reflect upon and take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences of these actions
  • Develop restorative justice approaches to resolve conflicts between pupils
  • Pupils are taught to respect the law and are taught the value of and reasons behind laws – that they govern and protect us.  Pupils are also taught the responsibilities that this system involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
  • We do this through:
    • Each class creates its own set of class rules
    • A behaviour management system which focuses on choices, rewards and sanctions
    • School assemblies and discussions
    • Visits from authorities such as the police, fire service and ambulance
    • A zero tolerance approach to any form of aggression, abuse or violence, which extends to pupils, staff and parents/carers
    • Praising children’s efforts and rewarding them not only for achievement in curriculum areas, but also for behaviour.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

  • Pupils are actively encouraged and given the freedom to make choices, knowing they are in a safe and supportive environments
  • We educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment, a planned curriculum and an empowering education
  • Pupils are supported to develop their self- knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their behavior and its consequences
  • Vulnerable pupils are protected and stereotypes challenged
  • A strong anti-bullying culture is embedded in the school
  • We do this through:
    • The curriculum, particularly through our E-Safety, PSHE and Jigsaw lessons
    • Opportunities for class discussions
    • School Parliament discussions and activities
    • Extra-curricular opportunities
    • Our Behaviour Policy
