2020 Covid Time Capsule

We are currently living through a huge, global event which will go down in history. In the future, you will be able to reflect back on this period of time and how things changed so drastically for us all in such a short space of time. 


Download a copy of the project below but resist the urge to race through it as we will be working through this together over the next three weeks! The project will be broken down into 'sessions' with activities to complete. We are not assigning a day to complete each session - it is up to you when you would like to complete the work. Work at your own pace.


  *Important* If you don't have access to a printer you can collect a copy of the project from the school entrance way.*

Session One

For the first session, colour in and decorate the front cover of your Time Capsule. Take your time with this as it will be the front page of a project that you will look back on with pride in many years to come. Think about the type of pencil strokes and pressure you will use.



The second page asks you to take a moment to think about the moments, news and people you are sharing this time with. Can you find a newspaper article to add to your document? Or perhaps go to the bbc news website and add some facts to your work. You may also want to write a description of what social distancing and self isolation means. Finally, in the box draw a picture of the people you live with. Be as creative as you can! 


Session Two 

To accompany your Time Capsule, today we would like you to think about planning and recording a vlog (video blog) as another way of recording your experiences during the pandemic. Imagine it is 20 years in the future and some people have never heard of Coronavirus. Think about what would be interesting reminisce about. To record you vlog, speak to an adult - could you use a phone, iPad, webcam? 


Before you jump infront of the camera, complete the planning sheet below. You can do this on your sheet or in your yellow books. You can really make your vlog your own! Maybe you could film one video a week and talk about what you have been doing and anything that has changed since the last time you filmed.


 Some ideas might include:

  • How old are you?
  • Who do you live with?
  • Where do you live?
  • What is your day-to-day life like? 
  • How have things changed?
  • What do you miss the most?
  • What is one thing you're really enjoying?

Session Three 

For session three, complete page three 'All About Me' of your time capsule booklet. You may also like to print extra pages and ask other people at home to complete them, or you could complete one for everyone in your house.  Think about how you will find out how tall you are and how much you weigh. An extra challenge could be to convert your weight from pounds to kilograms and your height from inches to centimetres.


Art task - Cardboard Self Portraits!

Next, we have an art activity to complete. Your challenge is to create a self portrait in the style of the masks below. Think about how you will create your features and make your design look like you! Extension: can you create a face for someone else you live with? How about for a pet?

You will need:

  • cardboard 
  • scissors
  • sellotape or glue
  • paint or colouring pens/pencils

Art task ideas!

Session Four

For the fourth session, we are going to complete page four: this page is titled ‘How I’m Feeling’. During this unprecedented time it is important to take time to look after our mental and physical health. Therefore, today's session has a PSHE focus. 


1. Emotions portrait

On a piece of paper, draw the outline a face. You can add your hair to the drawing but don’t draw any of your facial features – it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Once you have your outline, inside the face write down every emotion that you have felt since the start of the lockdown. These might be positive emotions but they might also be negative emotions. It is important to validate (accept and recognise) all of the emotions that you have felt and understand that it is perfectly natural to feel all of these different things.


Next, around the outside of the face write down things you can do safely at home which make you feel good. It might be activities such as: drawing, playing outside, having quiet time to yourself, facetiming friends or family or even playing your favourite game. Be as creative as you can. Your challenge for this afternoon is try and do at least two of the things that make you feel good!


If you have been feeling anxious or worried, remember you can always use the mindfulness techniques you have learnt at school. You may also like to try Rainbow Breathing:


2. Create an ‘After Lockdown Jar’

Ask an adult if you can have a jar which would have been going in the recycling, such as an empty jar of pasta sauce, a coffee jar, etc. Using small pieces of paper or post it notes, write down things that you are looking forward to doing once this is over. You can add as many as you want, try to think of at least five. They might be things like ‘sleepover at my best friend’s house’, ‘visit extended family’ or ‘go to the beach’.


3. Add another entry to your gratitude journal

Hopefully you have already seen the gratitude journal on the subject subpages. Today, add another entry to you journal. Spend a few minutes thinking about what you are really thankful for which you would normally have taken for granted. It could be your garden, that you have squash to drink rather than just water or that you have a sibling or pet to keep you company.  

Session Five 

One of the things we keep hearing about is ‘social distancing’, but what actually is it and how does it help? For session five, we would like you to conduct some research into social distancing and present your information in format of your choice.


Ways to present your work:

  • Write a paragraph explaining about social distancing
  • Create a factfile of information
  • Draw a diagram explaining how it works
  • Create a 3D model (using dominoes, lego or small toys)

Think about how both of these videos explain about social distancing. Which did you prefer? Why? Is one more effective for younger children? Why?
