Children's writing about Louis Braille (organising our writing)
This week we have looked at the life of Louis Braille. This was part of the preparation for our visit to the new college, a college for blind students. They sequenced the story, and used the website to retrieve facts about his life. This will be used to write a biography next week.
Louis Braille Maths: Investigating patterns, making predictions and working systematically
Our trip to the New College (for blind students)
The children worked in groups to create different freeze frames. They were given images from different traditional tales as a stimulus. Here are the results.
Forest School Freeze Frame
The first silent movie the children have looked at is The Lion's Cage by Charlie Chaplin. The children loved it. They explored the use of mime and how it can convey different emotions. As the topic progresses, the children will plan, create and perform their own silent movie, also adding their own music. Watch this space!
Before looking at every page, the children had a chance to predict which photos might be found on the underwater camera. After an initial brainstorm, they had a look at two examples, and adapted their ideas. We also decided to use the skills we had learned when exploring water colours, by creating a background wash.
During English this week we have been looking at the story called Flotsam. It is a picture book. The children have created captions, made predictions and created a paragraph to go with a page. They also inferred how the character might be feeling at different moments.
The children chose one of 6 pictures and wrote a descriptive paragraph about it. Their friends then had to guess which picture they had written about and decide which were the key words that helped them to do it. Click on the links to see the pictures and some of the children's writing.
Our final topic of the year is called, Lights, Camera, Action. The main thread of the topic will be communication. For our topic launch the children took part in a carosel of activities. These were:
- creating a sound map in forest school
- non-verbal communication
- blindfold games
- Lightbot- communicating through technology
- emotion charades
Topic Launch: Lights Camera, Action
The children looked at some art work by Richard Long. They were surprised that some of the art had been made using mud. The children then used different printing techniques to create their own art.

Class Assembly 10th May 2019
The children planted some sunflower seeds. This was part of an investigation which looked at which location would the seed germinate and grow the best in. The monitors will water each seed everyday measuring 15ml of water.
Forest School Week 1 Identifying Plants
During the summer term we will be using forest school. The children will be set a number of different tasks linked to the curriculum.
