Elm Class have been up to all sorts of fun and exciting activities this week. The children have enjoyed using the IPads in their computing session, practised their throwing skills in P.E and explored the natural world around them in Forest School!


This week, in English, we have been focussing on the story of Hansel and Gretel. The children did some incredible writing when retelling the story. We were so impressed at their level of independence and their ability to apply their phonic knowledge in their writing. 

In Maths, we have revised our knowledge of shapes and introduced fractions. The children enjoyed taking their learning outside and dividing shapes into halves and quarters on the playground. We were impressed at how quickly they grasped the concept of finding halves and quarters.

Healthy Body and Mind Day


It has been so lovely to have all of the children back in school this week! We have had a fantastic week which was kick started with our Elm Class welcome back party. The children had time to chat, catch up with their peers, play games, dance, sing and eat some tasty snacks.


We have continued with our 'Spring' topic and our focus book this week has been 'Titch'. We have planted broad beans, explored their structure and life-cycle. We then compared them to the sunflower seeds / plants that we looked at last week. 

In Maths, we have compared sizes of each other and items from the story, measured using non-standard measurements and using rulers.

On Friday, we finished the week by making some very special flower bouquets for Mothering Sunday.


It has been such a fun and exciting first week back. Mrs Judd, Miss Taylor and I (Miss Cassell) hope you all have a lovely, restful weekend and a great Mothering Sunday.



This week in Elm we have had a great start to our topic ‘Christmas’. We have had visits from an Elf called Mr Elfie Bean (the children named him!) and started to make decorations for our class Christmas tree, practiced making presents in our Elf Workshop and practiced writing Christmas wish lists for our friends at the writing table.

In Math we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and next week will practice making repeating patterns with shapes.  In English we have been reading 'A Letter to Father Christmas' and have focused on increasing our vocabulary by thinking of lots of adjectives to describe Father Christmas. 




This week the children have continued to work incredibly hard. We focused on the story of The Little Red Hen. The children sequenced the story, constructed windmills to mill the grain and even made their own bread. Luckily everyone helped, so everyone was able to try some!

In math the children have been introduced to and practiced subtraction. 

On top of this we learnt all about Remembrance Day and Children in Need. I am so proud of the kind and caring thoughts and attitudes the children showed when learning about these two topics. Well done Elm! 



This week has absolutely flown by! The children have worked really hard and are ready to enjoy the weekend, I'm sure.

Our focus has been on cows, in particular dairy cows. In our math we have continued to practice adding more by ordering the milk bottles from 0-20, choosing a number to start on and then moving our cow counter up the number line to add more. 

In English, we took a virtual visit to a dairy farm to learn all about how milk is made and produced. We looked at how it gets from the cows udder to our breakfast tables. The children were very good at remembering each stage of the process. 

On Friday, we had our first 'Independent Friday Write' of the year and Miss Cassell was very impressed with the pride the children took in their writing.

Next week our focus will be on goats!





This week we have been looking at chickens as a part of our Farm topic. The children loved baking their own cake to see what happens to an egg during the baking process.

Another highlight was when we all became scientists and explored the different uses of feathers. We studied the structure of a feather and made observational drawings, tested to see if feathers are good insulators and checked to see whether feathers float or sink!

The children have thrown themselves into our new farm topic whole-heartedly. They very much enjoy using the new role play Farm Shop area and can tell me lot's about their own farm yard experiences. 

This week our focus animal has been pigs. Ask your children to tell you some facts they now know about pigs! 




Elm Class have enjoyed another exciting and busy week at school. In phonics we have learnt five new phonemes g, o, c, k and ck. In English the children have placed themselves in the Colour Monster's shoes and written speech bubbles to accompany the story The Colour Monster Goes to School. 

In Maths we have consolidated sorting and ordering numbers to 10. We have then moved onto recognising and ordering ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc).

This week we have been continued with our Colour Monster theme. We have talked a lot about our feelings and how they change depending on circumstances and our environment.  The children have enjoyed exploring different emotions and thought of synonyms for each of the emotions the Colour Monster experiences.

In phonics the children have learnt four new phonemes (letter sounds) i,n,m and d. They particularily enjoyed writing the i phoneme on the playground with our 'invisible ink!'

 In maths we have been looking at the concept on more / fewer, counting one more, one less and comparing amounts. 




We have had a fantastic first full week of school in Elm Class. It has been so much fun getting to know each other and making lots of new friends. The children starting to understand their new daily routines and expectations well.

We have begun our first topic ‘emotions and changes’ by reading ‘The Colour Monster’ and have been associating certain colours with feelings. 

In phonics we have been looking at the phonemes s,a,t,p,i, and in maths we have been grouping objects and counting forwards to 10 and back.
