Gratitude Journal

Starting a gratitude journal

As we are living through a time where the world as we know if feels as if it has been turned upside down, now is a very good time to think about what you are thankful for and can appreciate around you. Despite the huge challenges and changes we all face, it may also help you to focus on the positive and what means the most to you.

Below is a blank journal where you could record three things you are thankful for or that make you happy. It might be a person, a thing or a place that you are thankful for. Once finished, you could complete your gratitude entries with your Covid 2020 Time Capsule

Here are some tips to help you get started on your journal:

Write it down - Don’t just make a list in your head. Write about the people and things you are grateful for in your life.

Be specific - The more detail you can think of, the better. For example: “I am grateful that my family are healthy and helping me with my school work, and that I have a loving relationship with someone who truly cares for me” is better than “I am grateful for my family”.

Focus on people - Focus on people who you are grateful for, rather than objects or things. Experiences such as being outside in your garden are important to capture too.

Enjoy surprises - We tend to feel more grateful when events are unexpected or surprising – capture this enjoyment by writing about it.

Don’t overdo it - Writing one to three times per week has been shown to be more effective than writing each day

You could also add illustrations, or decorate the cover of your journal.
